Tempus - the Trans-European Mobility Program for the University Studies – is an external program of the EU that supports modernisation of higher education systems in the EU partner countries and neighbouring states. Today, this program is open for countries of Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Western Balkans, North Africa and the Middle East.
Ukraine joined TEMPUS in 1993. At that period the program focused on improvements of university governance and management, upgrading old curricula and developing new course and programs, professional development of teachers. Ukrainian higher education institutions actively participated in the TEMPUS program from the very beginning. Therefore, it is only reasonable that currently TEMPUS projects are being implemented in most regions of Ukraine. Over that period, Ukrainian universities have demonstrated their commitment to reforms and strong dedication to the development of higher education, introduction of innovative approaches and state-of-the-art technologies in the educational field.
During the I, II, III phases of the Tempus Program since 1993 to 2006 with active participation of the Ukrainian partners 299 проектів have been approved with the total budget of € 53,6 mln., in particular: JEPs: 110; Рre-JEPs: 47; CPs: 14; IMGs: 100; SCMs: 28. As the result of the 1st call for proposals of Tempus IV 12 projects including Ukrainian partners JP (Joint Projects) have started implementation since February 2009.
